Whether you live in a house or an apartment, window boxes are a way to add plant life around the exterior of your home when you lack the space for a garden.
Fall window boxes can be designed in a number of different ways. Some sit directly on the window’s edge, while others are designed to hang under the window.
As you look at this gallery of window box ideas, you will see several different concepts that could be ideal for your outdoor décor this fall.
Out of the 21 ideas in this gallery, the one that I adore the most is the eighth entry. It is a lovely hanging window box that features an artistic design that would look great on a first-floor window.
This window box is not a hard solid box, but it is a soft peat moss pot inside of a metal frame that is curved with a uniquely chic design.
You can even incorporate gourds and other traditional festive fall items into the planter if you wish.
Check out our list of 21 Fall window boxes! I hope you’re inspired by these fabulous ideas!
1. Red, White, and Blue
The first window box in our gallery features a dual-tiered window box. The top portion, which is sitting in the windowpane, has blooms with shades of red. The next levels have blue and white flowers that look lovely together. Since the window box is comprised for individual planters, it is easy to arrange the blooms to your liking.
2. Poppy Paradise
This next idea is one that utilized a window box that sits directly on the window sill. The green planter is green to add some contrast to the neutral exterior. The orange flowers in the box create a charming display that is pleasing to the eye.
3. Lovely Lavender Wisps
The first thing that you will see in this idea is the small purple blooms that are gracefully hanging over the edge of the planter. The planter itself is a clay rectangular container that is designed to sit on the window sill, so the wispy flowers create a stunning design.
4. Daffodil Delight
The window boxes that are seen in the next idea in this gallery are metal boxes that match the shutters on the brick building. The design is simple, but the bright yellow daffodils add a bit of color to the front of the home that will catch the eye of anyone who walks down the sidewalk.
5. Marigold Madness
Marigolds are the perfect flower for a fall window box. This idea features a simple brown planter that is designed to sit right on the sill of your window. The beautiful foliage of the marigolds is lush, and the bright orange blooms are delightful.
6. Nook of Flowery Relaxation
This next idea utilizes a window box and potted plants to create a relaxing place to sit in your garden or patio. The bright red brick wall and the yellow blooms harmonize perfectly to create a magnificently pleasing display that brings a bit of color into the ever dulling shades of fall.
7. Table for Two
This idea makes me think of a quaint little coffee shop with an outdoor seating area. The flowers around the area have small orange and red blooms that create a warm feeling as you relax and sip on some hot tea. Seat cushions are the only thing that would add more to this idea.
8. Fall Is About The Harvest
Not all fall plants are about flowers. Hay bales, cornstalks, tall grasses, and gourds all feature fall colors and combine to make an attractive fall statement. Toss in some ornamental cabbage and marigolds, and you have a pretty fall statement.
9. Study In Orange And Yellow
Some window box combinations are the prettiest when they’re the simplest. Yellow nicotiana with white lady’s mantle forms the perfect background for pumpkins and gourds. Using small round “hay bales” for them to sit upon completes the fall picture.
10. When Colors And Textures Contrast
The soft puffs atop ornamental grass, the sweet perfume of the flowers, and the hard pumpkin in the window box arrangement are a study in contrasts and color coordination. Notice how the flowers begin as yellow and then morph into orange and red, all colors from the warm end of the spectrum. Even the soft puffs atop the ornamental grass stalks go from tan-orange to brown.
11. A Frame Job: The Riot Of Color
Notice how the decorator used the white window frame and window box as the frame for the colorful flowers. This decorator even used the same premise on the ground with the white pumpkins and plants. Do you see how the decorator interspersed the colorful blooms with cabbage or kale plants? The mums, black-eyed Susans, and marigolds look like they’re chasing the gourds out of the window box.
12. Rare Photo Of The 2022 Fall Flower Attack
The remains of a man were found today buried in a window box full of mums, asters, and trailing green leaves and vines. The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Don Bone Jovi. His remains were positioned as if he were trying to make off with the pretty purple mum plants. The remains will be on view until after Halloween.
13. The Variety Of Shades Of Color Is Amazing
There are times when using a flower and all its colors and shades will stop one in his tracks. This window box does just that, using all the shades of yellow and the colors apricot and white of the calendula flower. The separation of the shades of yellow was a stroke of genius.
